The most common question in factories is "my cart carries this much — which wheels do I need?" This article summarises how to choose wheels and configure a set for loads from 500 kg to 1 tonne, quickly and correctly.
A Quick Rule Before You Choose
Divide the total weight per cart by 3 (not 4) to allow for uneven floors, then choose wheels rated above that figure per wheel, so they won't deform or fail early.
| Total weight / cart | Per wheel (÷3) | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| ~500 kg | ~167 kg | 4 inch, set of 4 wheels |
| ~750 kg | ~250 kg | 4 inch (at full rating) or 6 inch |
| ~1,000 kg | ~333 kg | 6 inch, set of 4 wheels |
| Over 1,000 kg | Over 333 kg | 6 inch + safety margin |
How to Configure the Set
- Straight travel + lockable: 2 rigid + 2 brake casters
- Easy steering + lockable: 2 swivel + 2 brake casters
- Heavy loads, stability first: choose 6 inch with cast-iron core and double bearings
Example: a cart carrying 900 kg → 900 ÷ 3 = 300 kg per wheel → choose 6-inch wheels (rated 350 kg each) in a set of 2 rigid + 2 brake for a stable, lockable cart
Summary
For loads up to 750 kg, 4 inch is enough. At or above 1 tonne, move up to 6 inch with a cast-iron core, and always allow a safety factor for durability and safety.
