Material decides how well a trolley resists rust, how easy it is to clean and how long it lasts in your environment. The wrong choice can mean early rust — or paying far more than you need to.
The 3 Main Options
| Material | Rust resistance | Hygiene | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Painted / powder-coated mild steel | Good in dry areas | Medium | Economical |
| Galvanised steel | Very good | Medium | Mid-range |
| Stainless steel | Best | Best | Higher |
Painted / Powder-Coated Mild Steel
Strong and economical, ideal for general factories with dry floors. The thing to watch is that where paint is chipped by impacts, the steel underneath starts to rust — so choose a scratch-resistant finish and grind welds smooth before painting.
Galvanised Steel
The zinc coating protects against rust much better than ordinary paint, making it suitable for damp areas, near water or semi-outdoor use such as warehouses and loading bays.
Stainless Steel
Doesn't rust, has a smooth surface and is easy to clean — ideal for food, pharmaceutical and cleanroom facilities that wash down often or have hygiene requirements. Stainless steel is usually TIG welded for clean, smooth welds.
How to Choose for Value
- General factory, dry area: painted or powder-coated mild steel
- Damp areas, near water or semi-outdoor: galvanised steel
- Food, pharma, cleanroom or frequent wash-down: stainless steel
